The unfortunate fact is that the ubercompetitive ones are the ones that got straight A's in premed because mommy didn't love them and it validates their sense of self to wipe other people's noses on the floor. But at some point they end up as miserable middle aged doctors and realize that while they were busy winning at all their twisted little games, the rest of the world wasn't even playing.

Life is too short; study, eat, sleep, play (not necessarily in that order), and outlive the bastards. And I mean that not in the life expectancy sense.

Courage!

competition: it never ends. i never really considered myself competitive, but i actually am very. unfortunately i suck horrible at doing better than others. i'm convinced that it's my sole purpose in life to make other people feel better about themselves. whatever, i hear internal medicine isn't that hard to get into anyway.

Jeeze man, I really dont like the sound of competition. Pass/Fail sounds bette in a way, but I guess it can be harder to gauge yourself in those situations.

You've got a pretty hardcore attitude though, and I'm sure you'll come fighting through.

My school is pass/fail as well, but that doesn't mean I can slack off and get by. The school somehow gives us an arbitrary mark at the end of every exam and those who are at the bottom and don't meet the cutoff have to either repeat the whole year or if they're lucky, they get to retake the exam. No matter how you put it or no matter where you are in the world, medical school is quite stressful.

For us it's pass/fail and OSCE's for the last 2 years which I'm looking forward to!

Ange: hahah the only photo I will ever post on the internet of me is the one in Mybloglog profile... I use to have a bigger version of that posted on my blog but I took it down when I had to upgrade the blogging software.

Maybe one day I'll post a face pic.. but at the same time I want to get more visitors... not drive them away!

This is when I'm so glad I'm sleeping with my professors...er... I mean, so glad that my medical school doesn't give out marks. We have a pass/fail/honours system and one set of exams per semester at the end of the semester. This means that we don't get our marks until approximately 3 months later and by then you're just glad not to fail. This system has been really successful in toning down competitiveness in medial school over marks. Instead, people are competitive about answering questions in class and how many stupid facts they can memorize, and even that isn't so bad. Soon they're hoping to do away with honours which will leave us with a pass/fail system - even less competition. You may be asking yourself, how do people then compete for residency positions? Good reference letters during clerkship, outside experiences in research and clinic and good interviews are the way to score high with residency directors. I think that overall this system works quite well.
