Darthmouth medical school is the fourth oldest school in the USA dating back to 1797 and is part of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center which incldues the Mary Hitchcock memorial Hospital, Cotton Cancer Center and White River Junction VA.  The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic is very large, serving 1.5 million people and containing 372 beds.

Littleton Regional Hospital

The hospital is located in Littleton - a town in the north-east consisting of 12,000 people.  The hospital serves this and the nearby small towns.  Although it is small, it is amazingly equipped in terms of both machines and people (25 consultants).  For example, it has a mobile lithotripsy unity, an MRI and a CT scanner.  The consultant staff cover many specialities ranging from family practice, internal medicine, cardiology, radiology, oncology, gastroenterology, all the way to ophthalmology and urology.

There are no other medical students here so the staff are keen to teach.  You can organize what you want to do on a day-to-day basis and do as much or as little as you want.  Teaching is mainly in an outpatient setting, although some consultants, i.e. neurology, may well take you further afield to places such as the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for lectures and grand rounds.

Everyone is really friendly.  If you’re outgoing, people will always be asking you round for dinner.  In the summer there are many outdoor sports and in the winter this is one of the great skiing resorts on the east coast.  Public transport isn’t very good, but there is a regular bus to and from Boston and other nearby major cities.  It’s four hours south of Boston and two hours north to the Canadian border.  There’s lots to do if you like outdoor pursuits.  This elective has been highly recommended if you want to see a not so famous part of America that is nothing like the cliche of superficiality and commercialism often associated with the country.

Accommodations and meals have been free; however, don’t expect much as they have no proper accommodations for staff.  There is usually an empty room on the medical floor.  It’s not too bad though, with your own bathroom and cable tv.
