What You Will Need Before You Apply for Your Student Visa Online
You will need a credit card in order to submit your visa application online. What? Did you actually think it’s free to get a student visa? You would think that the price of the visa was included in the cost of tuition judging from the amount of money we have to pay to attend, but sadly that’s not the case.
It is strongly recommended that your visa is valid for 6 months. You should just consider getting a brand new passport if this is the case because passports are valid for 5 years; you will not have to worry about your passport expiring when you’re studying overseas. Once everything is completed and you are approved for your visa, immigration will stamp your passport with the newly obtained Australian visa.
Certificate of Enrolment (COE)
The Australian school that you will be attending will most of the time provides you with an electronic certificate of enrolment via e-mail after you have paid the minimum amount to secure your seat in the upcoming class. You will need this when you launch your visa application either online or in paper format. The COE is just a code you have to put into the form when asked. If you think about it, the Australian government isn’t going to issue you a student visa if you’re not actually enrolled in one of their Universities.
How to Apply for Your Student Visa
Get your Passport number ready. The number is located where it says “Passport Number/N° de passeport” on the page with your picture on it in the Canadian Passport.
Have your Certificate of Enrolment ready. This number is provided by your Australian University after you have paid to secure your spot. They usually send this through e-mail.
Have your Credit card ready to pay for the application fee.
Go to http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/students.htm to launch your online visa application. It’s very simple and should take you less than 20 minutes to answer all the questions.
After you have finished answering all the questions and paying the application fee, you need to print off the medical forms that they provide.
Make an appointment with the designated panel doctor and bring the medical examination form and radiology form with you when you go see the panel doctor. A list of Australian designated panel doctors can be found here http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/panel-doctors/index.htm.
Fill out part A of both the medical examination and radiology forms before you see the panel doctor.
You need to have 3 passport photos, your passport, and the medical examination and radiology forms with you when you see the doctor.
The doctor will contact you if there is something wrong with your medical results and if you need additional lab work done. The Australian High Consulate will also contact you via email if there is something wrong with your application providing that you have requested email correspondence along with regular mail.
How Long Will it Take to Get Your Visa?
It takes about 9 days from the time of your medical examination for the doctor to send it off to Ottawa. Then it takes about 2-3 weeks for the Australian High Consulate in Ottawa to process it providing that there were no delays with your application and that everything was filled out correctly and that no additional alb work was necessary. The whole process should take a maximum of about 4 weeks.
