   Hello there. My name is Nurul Aimi, a 3rd yr medical student from Malaysia. For your information, all of us are required to do medical elective posting during our early 5th yr, and I am very interested in doing it in Australia, precisely Melbourne. Could you please leave me any kind of detailed informations on how to apply there, and miscellanous details, so that I can start do certain arrangements and proposal. I also need to know on accommodations, basic requirements from Medical School, University Of Melbourne and so on. TQ.

   Hi there, I think the best way to do it is to contact the school directly. They are generally really nice and helpful! You’re going to love Melbourne! It’s one of the best cities in the world. So much to do there on your day off and if you get a chance to go during the summer (i.e. December-February) then you’re going to get a chance to enjoy the hot Australian weather!

   Hi All,

   I just surfing the internet and i found this website, which is pretty cool in helping those medical students outside Australia coming here for their elective rotation. Well, i’m sasha and was a medical student once in Monash Uni, Victoria, Australia. Just recently graduated and currently working at one of the hospital here. Anyway, if you’re looking at doing your elective here in melbourne, i would say, you wont be disappointed. because here, our hospital especially teaching hospitals are really great and the staffs there are very helpful to help you in every aspect of you learning pursuit. I have been doing my 5 year course MBBS at monash, and i found that my clinical years at the hospitals were the most rewarding years afterall, and i have learnt so much things during the rotations that the years i spent in the lecture halls at the uni. How to apply? Well the system that works here is, when you want to apply for a clinical rotation at a specific hospital, it depends of the hospital anyway. if it is a teaching hospital, then you have to apply you elective rotation (aslo called “clerkship rotation” for some hospitals)through the associated university, e.g. Monash Medical Centre is a teaching hospital for Monash University, so you CAN’T directly apply to the hospital, you will be ignored, because you dont follow the system. Any associated teaching hospitals in Australia works this way. You have to check it first before you apply, whether the hospital is associated with a certain university or not, if yes, then you have to call the university’s clinical school and arrange your placement with them, if not, then you have to call directly to the hospital’s department that you intending to do your placement and talk to the secretary or head of department or any person that can help you with this. Please note this, some of the hospitals here in Australia are only accepting an application that is applied a year prior to the prefered date of your elective rotation, meaning that if you are intending to do you elective in january 2010, you should send them your application form on or before january 2009. if you apply after january 2009 for a rotation comencing january 2010, your application might not be considered. HOWEVER, not all universities policy here like this. there are some which still consider apllication does not have to be a year prior, but you guys better check with them first before you start anything.

   My suggestion is,
   firstly, check when you are intending to do your clinical elective.
   second, check which hospital you want to do yours. Better to list down at least three to four options on a paper, put your preference to the list.
   third, search, surf and collect info about the hospitals in your list. you can surf the info in the internet, there are plenty of info you can find there. most important info are - is the hospital associated with any university? is the department at the hospital offer a clinical placement for student e.g. if you want to do endocrinology rotation, some hospitals do have endocrinolgy department, some dont, but also those who do have, some dont offer any placement for students etc. Better check this first !! you can check this either stated in the website or by calling to the clinical school incharged. get their phone number or email address or fax number or what so ever so that you can contact them.
   fourth, contact them. i prefer to just call them. its easy and the most efficient way to clarify what is in your head. Better to list down all your concerns and questions before hand, so that you dont have to call them many time. call during office hour here in Australia (9am - 5pm), for those who are oversee, you should calculate the time difference guys.
   fifth, then follow the instruction they give you. If you want to apply in australia, there are some regulations by the goverment and immigration people that you have to have some documentations and the legal stuffs if you want to study here. The people that you have called, should have told you this if you ask them. they know better than me.

   That’s all you need to know about applying an elective (clerkship) rotation here in Australia, i guess. If you want to come here to melbourne, i suggest to come during spring time (sept - nov), it is just lovely here during this time of the year.

   Hi.. I’m a third year medical student from Malaysia. I’ve been reading some of the comments here and definately they are very helpful. However, i was wondering, i’m doing a project on certain topics, topics of interest.. that is related to medical field..eg: stem cell, bariatric (obesity) medicine etc. but i’m not looking for a long posting in one particular department but more of an overall look and may be some form of hands on in these particular fields.. Well i am wondering if anyone could point out to me the procedures that i need to follow in order for me to do my project in australia? and are the procedures similar to that of applying for an elective posting as mentioned above? thanks..
